How Lollipop changed the Android ecosystem

Android is arguably one of the best mobile operating systems out there. It was originally based on a custom version of Linux Kernal and a few other open source software. It was mainly designed for the smartphones that use a touchscreen which nowadays is majority of all the smartphones. Its popularity stems from the ease of operation and its creativity at that time. It’s primarily owned by google thanks to its patents and any uncertified devicewon’t be able to use android outside the google ecosystem.


Its interface is based loosely on direct movements of the user that relate to our common day to day life like swiping, tapping, pinching and its reverse to change the size of the objects. This was one of the main reasons for its popularity because the user didn’t have to learn anything as it was so similar to the actions and reaction of Real-world objects. It also had the functionality of the onscreen keyboard and to make the user experience better it even included haptic feedback through vibration motors and sensors to give the user a better feel. Its customisation options were vast meaning that you could change the interface to the way you like it from the theme and the position of apps and even the add widgets.

Lollipop Release: Let’s talk about one of its most popular versions the Lollipop which was released on 25th June 2014 in select devices and was available to the general publicby November 12th. It was Android version 5.0 and went upto 5.1.1. It was one of the biggest updates when it came to Android the company has revealed that they had added over 5000 new API's along with an all new 'Material design language'. It had worked on many of the existing bugs at the time and had revamped the notifications and even increased the efficiency giving the smartphone an overall performance boost.

1. Notification Improvements

The notifications earlier were locked and restricted to just showing meaning that you had to more or less go to the page to see what was needed. With lollipop that hassle was solved by giving the lockscreen full access that by swiping down you could see all the notifications in detail which would mean that you could see the entire issue right there on the lock screen literally combining both which made it easier. They even added a whole new kind of notification that was kind of like a stick note which was for really mundane tasks and called it a heads-up notification for example 'Your meeting is in 5 minutes' giving you a heads up.

2.Lock-screen Improvements

Here with the help of software and sensors combined it was able to predict whether the phone was in the Owners hand or not, it used sensors like the GPS and the Bluetooth andcompared it to the existing habits of the user to predict. It was optional if the user didn’t want his location monitored all the timehe/she could simply toggle it off. The feature was called ' Personal Unlocking'.

3. Improved Graphics

Android added an extension pack with this update which had various software tweaks like Tessellation, Geometry shades, and Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression allowing for improved performance when it came to games that rely on graphics and had faster refresh rates which allowed for desktop rendering pipeline which was demonstrated live during its unveiling event.

4. Battery Enhancements

It allowed the user to decide whether to optimize battery power consumption in apps by shutting apps in the background or sending them to power saving mode to ensure longer battery life and it did all this in the background. All this was a part of Project Volta and it relied on the Battery Historian tool and also a whole new API to help developers make their apps power efficient and cost- efficient at the same time, thanks to GoDaddy coupons.

5. Material Design

It had branched out from the flat design of the elements of the apps and introduced elevation values allowing the user to see shadows giving him /her a new perspective and also several animations to give the user a much better fresher overall experience. All these along with the performance was why lollipop was a one of the most important steps in the evolution of android. Nowadays Android has evolved to the Android One which has improved a lot in terms of features and technology Its customisation has reached new heights and nowadays with the use of AI Android is planning on reaching new heights but at its core updates the lollipop update will always have its stand as one of the best updates ever to come on a smartphone in its prime.
